룻기의 배경은 1절에서 보여준다. '사사들이 치리 하던 때'이다.

가나안 땅에 기근이 들었다. 

베들레헴, 곧 '떡집'이라는 의미를 가진 베들레헴도 기근이 들었다. 

이 기근으로 엘리멜렉의 집안도 고통을 당했다.

이스라엘 땅에 기근이 들었을 때에 모압 지방으로 이주하는 한 집안의 이야기다.

엘리멜렉이 죽은 후 그의 두 아들은 모압의 여인들과 결혼했는데  두 아들마저 죽자 나오미는 비통한 지경에 이르렀고 나오미는 고향 이스라엘 땅으로 돌아온다.

두 며느리 중 룻은 나오미를 따라서 베들레헴으로 돌아온다.

그들이 도착했을 때는 보리 추수를 시작할 시기로 모든 곡식 중 처음 추수하는 계절이다.

룻은 보아스의 밭으로 가서 이삭을 줍는다.

보아스는 룻에게 친절과 호의를 베풀었다.

룻은 하루의 일과를 끝내고 시어머니에게 보고한다.

나오미는 룻에게 보아스의 밭에서 계속 일할 것을 명하고,  보아스가 그들의 친족임을 알려준다.

 

나오미가 고향 땅에 돌아왔을 때 온 성읍이 이들로 인하여 떠들썩했다.

아마도 이들은 나오미의 초라한 모습에 수군대었을 것이다.

그 이름의 뜻인 '희락' 이라고 칭하지 말고 '마라' , '괴로움'이라 칭하라 한다.

나오미는 자신의 형편이  몹시 슬프고 초라하고 우울했을 것이다.

그러나 나오미는 이러한 고통 속에서 하나님의 손길을 인정했다. 

나오미의 겸손을 통해, 이 고통의 시간을 통해 하나님은 회복케 하신다.

The background of the Book of Ruth is presented in chapter 1, during the time when the judges ruled Israel.

There was a famine in the land of Canaan, and even Bethlehem, which means "house of bread," was affected.

This famine caused hardship for the household of Elimelech.

In search of food, Elimelech's family migrated to Moab, where his two sons married Moabite women.

However, after Elimelech and his two sons died, Naomi, Elimelech's wife, was left alone with her two daughters-in-law.

Naomi decided to return to her homeland of Israel, and her daughter-in-law Ruth chose to go with her.

They arrived in Bethlehem just as the barley harvest was beginning, and Ruth went to glean in the fields.

She ended up in the field of Boaz, who showed her kindness and favor.

Ruth reported back to Naomi, who recognized that Boaz was a close relative and instructed Ruth to continue working in his fields.

 

When Naomi returned to her homeland, the whole town was agitated because of them.

Perhaps they were whispering about Naomi's shabby appearance.

Do not call it 'joy', which is the meaning of its name, but call it 'mara' or 'suffering'.

Naomi must have been very sad, shabby, and depressed about her situation.

However, Naomi acknowledged God's hand in this pain.

Through Naomi's humility, through this time of suffering, God restores.
